Set of 4, vintage 1950s, modernist Cambridge Glass Company "Square" Champagne or Sherbet Glasses. These Art Deco-inspired glasses were one of the most popular designs for the company as it appealed to the mid century modern tastes of the day. (The simple design is similar to the limited production, Art Deco, award-winning Libbey Glass "Knickerbocker" design by Douglas Nash from the 1930s but the pattern was not patented.) Although Cambridge did mark some of its glassware, the glasses in this line were unmarked as shown here. Cambridge Glass Company was founded in 1901 in Cambridge, Ohio by the owners of the National Glass Company of Pennsylvania to concentrate on fine hand made glass tableware and due to the abundance of natural resources in the local area. The company struggled and was purchased out of bankruptcy by its manager in 1907 and continued operation, producing all types of glass, until 1954, when it closed briefly, reopened and finally closed in 1958, with molds and equipment liquidated. Many of the designs of Cambridge Glass are now owned by the organization that owns the National Museum of Cambridge Glass. This set of glasses is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, breaks or any major wear apparent. A lovely set for toasting a special occasion or for serving fruit or dessert.
