Set of 2, vintage 1970s, abstract, hand carved Milo Wood Bird Sculptures or Bookends from Hawaii. These Modern Art figurines were carved to show off the grain of the pan-tropical wood species and given soft curves and polished to its famed smooth, soft finish which makes them irresistible to touch. They are both signed on the bottom " Palm Studios, Hawaii (milowood)", a producer of island handcrafted pieces that no longer exists. Although the two figures vary slightly, they both measure approximately 6 1/2" wide, 9" high and 4" deep and weigh about 3 lbs each. Each figure is made of 2 separate pieces (head section and the body) that are connected using a wood pin. Milo wood or Pacific Redwood, prized for is durability and attractive grain, was brought by the Polynesians to the Hawaiian Islands and has been primarily used to make food bowls and utensils. These figures are in very good condition, with only slight wear and a few natural cracks apparent - see photos for details. These mid century pieces of art make a lovely statement when styled on a coffee table or console or use them on a shelf as bookends.
