Vintage 1930s, Cooper Brothers & Sons, Ltd, stainless steel Steak Knife Set of 11 with genuine antler horn handles. These knives, made by one of the most prominent silversmiths and cutlery manufacturers in Sheffield England (established in 1885) that were mass producing cutlery using the newly invented "stainless steel" by 1929. Knives from the 30's typically feature dense, deeply textured natural stag horn and silver-plate or sterling end caps and collars which hold the antler horn on the blade. (By the 1950s, end caps were phased out on these sets.) Cooper Brothers went out of business in 1983 but its brand is owned by Frank Cobb & Co. and its Arundel Street factory works are now a historical landmark in the cultural industries quarter in Sheffield. These knives measure 8 1/4" long and have a 7/8" wide blade and a 3/4" diameter handle. Each one weighs about 2.5 oz. In very good condition, with wear commensurate with age and use. A couple of handles that show partial hairline cracks in the natural horn - see photos for details. A set of knives with a rustic style, perfect for bringing old English flair to a table or buffet.
