Set of 2, vintage Santa Clara Pueblo Blackware ceramic Pots or Vases in different shapes and with differing design treatments, each signed by the artist. Blackware pieces, created by the Tewa potters of the Pueblos of New Mexico, are made of hand coiled local clay which is stone polished to a high gloss finish. The larger, gourd-shaped vase, created and signed on the bottom by Ramona Sisneros, has a 4 geometric step, deeply incised design on the outside of the bowl, signifying growth built on a foundation of high value according to Tewa traditions. Ramona Sisneros, active in the mid to late 20th century, is one member of 3 generations of family members who were potters in the Pueblo. This vase or pot measures 5 1/4" high and 5 1/2" in diameter. The top edge measures 3 1/2" wide with 3/4" thick edge (makes the top opening 2 3/4" wide). The bottom is 2 1/4" wide. The smaller, bulb-like bowl, created and signed on the bottom by Ann Taliman, a mid century Santa Clara potter known for producing polished pieces with subtle details, has a classic bear paw pattern pressed into its glossy sides. This charming pot measures 3 1/4" high and 4 1/4" wide with a 2 7/8" top opening and 2 1/8" wide base. The pots weigh 1 lb 11oz and 1lb 3oz, respectively. They are in very good condition with no chips or cracks with some slight wear to the exterior glossy surfaces - see photos for details. Pots were found in a collection from an LA-based estate. Such blackware pottery is wonderful as a useful element to a shelf or table but adds a lovely sculptural element. Its simple design lends itself to pairing with modern and traditional styles.
