Pair of large, vintage, Italian hand carved white marble Horse Head Bookends with grey and white marble bases. These beautiful bookends measure 9" wide 2 3/8" deep and 7 3/4" high. The horse heads are carefully carved, giving these horses a warm, handsome faces with an unposed, active gesture, giving the feeling of movement. The translucent white marble chosen is fairly clear with only slight veining in the white and the stone for the bases is an evenly mottled grey and white. These bookends are in good vintage condition, with only some chipping on the edge of the ear, top of the mane and some small dings on one of the horses, although with the carving, these seem to blend in well and are difficult to find - see photos for details. A well designed and sculpted pair of horses that are striking as sculptures on their own and will certainly be a notable design element to any bookshelf or table.
