Vintage 1970s, hand made, real taxidermy, wall mount "Jackalope", the mythical animal of North American folklore. This folk art piece is made from the head of a real rabbit and a pair of real white deer antlers, cleaned and preserved, that have been mounted on a simple pine shield for hanging similar to typical hunting prizes. [Jackalopes, legendary in the US, are attributed to an idea made by Douglas Herrick of Douglas, Wyoming in 1829, after a hunting trip for jackrabbits. Herrick and his brother had studied taxidermy and when he looked at the jackrabbits they had brought back from their hunt lying on the floor next to the antlers of several deer they also returned with, the idea was born. Herrick created the beast and sold it to a local hotelier, who displayed it in the Douglas La Bonte Hotel to entertain guests. Douglas, WY became known as the "Home of Jackalopes" and the town Chamber of Commerce has issued thousands of Jackalope Hunting Licenses to tourists, valid only for official Jackalope season which occurs only on June 31 (a non-existant date as June only has 30 days). Jackalopes have appeared in many places across the American West and has become a mythical character. Such characterizations and storytelling is found in other cultures around the world. For example, similar creatures in various forms (crossing or combinations of mountain animals) have also been part of folklore in alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria, France and Germany for ages often with tongue-in-cheek descriptions of their habits and characteristics.] This piece of humorous wall art measures 18" high, 6 1/4" wide and 11" deep. Marked on the back of the shield is the outlet where the piece was sold, which is located just east of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains of California: Cedar Glen Trading Post and Hardware, a community store since 1945 which sells everything from hardware to souvenirs. This piece is in excellent condition with no major damage or soiling from age (fur is soft and clean) - purchased as a souvenir and kept in covered storage for years. A high quality, fun decor piece to bring a smile or giggle to any space.
