Vintage pair of hand carved, grey and white soapstone Chinese Foo Dog figurines. These whimsical figures sit atop an integrated soapstone plinth, which adds to their weight. They measure 4" high, 2 3/8" wide, 1 3/8" deep and weigh 11oz. each. Foo Dogs or Imperial Lions, as they are recognized in Chinese Culture, have been revered as the guardians of the gates of heaven and have been carved from stone and placed at the entrances of temples, palaces and other important buildings to protect against evil entering those places. A pair of these lions, when placed correctly at an entrance are believed to improve the guardian energy to a home or business. Foo dogs are placed in pairs, with the male on the left and the female on the right, and are depicted slightly differently to highlight their complimenting elements to balance the energy they bring. The female is shown with her paw protecting her cub, showing her maternal protective instinct which extends to the devotion, loyalty and protection of the home. The male has his paw on the earth, symbolizing the control the male has over circumstances and how it protects your private domain. Overall, the pair protects against negative energy and promotes lucky wealth energy. This little pair of soapstone Imperial Lions is in very good condition, with slight wear on the edges of the intricate details on the mane and plinth - see photos for details. An adorable set to bring good energy to any small space (facing its entrance, according to fung shui rules), or add to an office to bring wealth energy. These figurines also make an interesting set of bookends or can add interest to a mantel or table vignette.
