Vintage 1980s, cast pewter Sculpture of a seated Don Quixote Reading by French artist MICHEL LAUDE, also known as Michel Lande (see NOTES below for details on the artist). This limited edition - 144 of 500 - piece is done in a touching style with significant attention to detail that shows a compassionate and childlike view into the character from Cervantes' novel of 1605. Don Quixote is shown with his hat removed, hanging on the corner of the throne-like, traditional Spanish style chair, sitting with a large open book on his lap intently reading and contemplating. He has a stack of other books at the ready under his bent right leg which props up the book for him to view. The sculpture measures 7" high, 4" wide and 5" deep at its outermost points. The artist's signature is etched into the back of the chair with a marking "Etain fins" indicating its pewter material and the edition details. Also on the back is the foil sticker of the art studio from which the piece was purchased: L'Atelier Vaduz (Liechtenstein), which is no longer in business. In very good condition with patina and a few spots of slight corrosion - see photos for details. A charming character to add a literary statement or wit to a bookshelf, desk or table vignette.

NOTES:
Michel Lande, also referred to as Michel Laude, produced Sculptures in France from the 1970s through to the 1990s, when collectible pewter sculptures were popular in the French and American markets. He is known for his detailed figurative works in cast pewter and bronze which referenced historical, folkloric and everyday characters. His sculptural pieces of Don Quixote, his horse and sidekick, Sancho were noteworthy and sold through galleries and specialized giftware retailers of the time. His pieces now appear occasionally in the secondary market on 1stDibs, Ebay and with dealers and continue to be sought after due to their character and quality of workmanship.
