Vintage, hand carved, round cinnabar lacquer Box with domed lid. The top is adorned with peonies with stems and leaves surrounded by Chinese scroll designs. The box measures 2 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" high (with the lid on). Red lacquerware boxes such as this one are made with a turned wood base upon which layers of red-tinted (with cinnabar, a red colored mineral from volcanic areas) lacquer is applied in up to 35 or more layers, air dried and carved. Lacquerwork has been made in China since before the 11th century, being perfected during the Song and Yuan dynasties (1150-1360 AD) when more intricate designs and colors were popularized. Such boxes have traditionally been given as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries or weddings as the red in the lacquer symbolizes longevity and the peonies "Queen of the Flowers" are known to symbolize abundance, happiness and a fruitful life. Small boxes such as this one were used for incense or cosmetics, although in more modern times have become vanity items for rings and other small personal items. This box is in excellent condition, clean and ready to use - see photos for details. A lovely box for gifting or to add a striking note in styling a space or storing a special item.
