Vintage 1950s, Anglo-Indian Kashmir deeply carved walnut Jewelry or Trinket Box with mythical animal and foliage motif. This box is a good example of Indian "Dhoon Kaem" or "walnut work", a delicate, careful process of chipping, carving and rounding of wood surfaces to create a pattern in high relief, typically with organic forms and motifs, all done by a master craftsman. Notice the deer hunting motif on this box with the many deer, lovely birds, and hunters among the lush foliage, flowers and seed pods both on the top of the box as well as encircling the sides and a couple of deer on the inside of the lid. The interior of these boxes are generally plain or lined, as this one is with royal blue velvet. The lid is hinged with a brass piano hinge and it has a working brass lock. The original key was lost and replaced with a newer silver metal key with a black tassel. The box measures 11" wide, 7 1/2" deep and 4 1/4" high (when closed) and weighs a hefty 2 lbs 14 oz. The box is in overall very good condition, very sturdy despite some separation of the wood panels at the corners due to some drying of the wood - see photos for details. A stunning box for jewelry or storing items on a desk or console. Makes a wonderful styling piece!
