Pair of vintage, 1950’s lined ivory silk tapered drum lamp shades with white hand painted blooming cherry branches. These shades were originally produced to accompany table lamps of Chinese blanc de chine porcelain and modern, western-type wiring components - a classic Showa Period product that blended traditional Japanese décor favorites with western mid-century modern design of the time, many of which were exported to the American market. The shades reflect a typical, nature-inspired kimono motif of the 1950’s, executed in a mid-century, time-on-tone colorway on typically western lamp shades. The cherry blossoms are a Japanese traditional symbol of beauty, renewal and the transient nature of life. The silk fabric on the outside is a slightly textured ivory-colored silk weave with bright white painted motifs in front and back and matching folded bias trim on the top and bottom edges. The linings are made of a smooth woven matching color ivory, silk or silk-like fabric. These shades measure 16” high, 15” in diameter on the top and 16” in diameter on the bottom. The brass and brass plated spider attachments have a 4” drop from the top of the shade to allow for a short lamp harp / final. In very good condition with just a few blemishes – some small yellow spots on the fabric on the inside lining and bottom trim as shown in detailed photos. A lovely and unusual pair of shades for a pair of vintage blanc de chine lamps or to adorn a new, modern lamp set to show off these subtly elegant hand painted shades!
