Set of 6, vintage, hand painted floral motif Wall Plates with scalloped and reticulated or lattice / cutout rims in a pink and white colorway by Vestal Alcobaca, Portugal. These plates bear the classic designs of hand painted florals in bright colors, coupled with scalloped and reticulated rims that Vestal has been known for for centuries. Vestal is located in the central coastal area of Portugal, just north of Lisbon between the Alco and Baca Rivers. It is the clay from the se rivers, the power of the river flow as well as the proximity to the beaches for sand that allowed the city to establish and grow its ceramic production. Originally developed in the famous 12th century Monastery of Alcobaca, it wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries that pottery production in the area became significant. Modernization of the production as well as influence in style from the popularity of Chinese and Deft pottery brought the introduction of blue and white tin glazed earthenware, also known as fiance, which eventually became the Vestal pottery of today. The company's pottery came to the US after WW2 when the company focused on export of tableware in the classic local style of bright glazes and hand painted florals. These plates are a part of that export market and were purchased in the 1970s. This set of plates were originally designed for wall display and all have holes on the bottom rims to allow for easy hanging. The large plate is marked with the Vestal stamp and the smaller plates are simply marked "Portugal" although they carry the classic floral motifs of Vestal and were purchased together. The large plate measures 11 1/8" in diameter and is 1 7/8" high at the rim. The other plates measure 9", 8" 7 3/4" 7 5/8" and 7 3/4" in diameter and are all 1 1/4" - 1 3/8" high at the edge. The set is in very good condition, with no chips, breaks or major apparent ware marks - see photos for details. A stunning set perfect for a decorative plate wall in lovely pink and white!
