Vintage Robert Held Art Glass (Vancouver Studio) iridescent, swirled /
pulled feather purple glass oval vase with a thick top lip. This stunning vase measures 3.5" (9cm) wide and 2.75" (7cm) deep and is 4" (10cm) high with a heavy hand. Even in low light, the glass on this bowl throws shimmers of green and yellow amid the varying densities of purple and dappled clear glass. In perfect condition with no chips or scratches. A sculpture on its own! Robert Held is known as THE glass artist of Canada who still makes items at his studio in Parksville (Vancouver Island), British Columbia, Canada. Held, a child of parents, he went on to get his Masters Degree in Fina Art from the University of Southern California and won the prestigious "Glen Lukins Award" for his new work in ceramics. He became the head of the ceramics department at Canada's Sheridan College - School of Design. During his tenure, he visited the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and was introduced to glassblowing which became his new passion. A year later, in 1969, after returning back to Sheridan College, he established the college's first hot glass blowing program, which gave many Canadian artists these skills. Held left teaching after several years and established his first studio in Calgary, Skookum Art Glass, then moved to Vancouver, a studio that became the largest hot glass production studio in Canada. In 2013, he retired, closed the studio and sold all his glass making equipment and moved to Parksville, BC. A few years later and bored of retirement activities, Held discovered that an art school in Seattle was getting rid of its old glass making equipment to upgrade and he showed up first to purchase all the equipment and the furnaces and established his newest studio: Robert Held Art Glass where he still produces both custom and production pieces with 2 of his former artists. His variety and depth of skills, married with inspiration from Monet and Klimt as well as contemporary designers and artists, manifests itself in a wide variety of pieces. This bowl is a creation of his time in his famous studio in Vancouver and is a wonderful example of his exquisite skill.
