Pair of antique 19th century, Italian red marble octagonal Inkwells or Decorative Boxes with bronze mounts. These French, neoclassical-style boxes with hinged lids and pontiled edge mounts have bottoms covered with blue and yellow woven damask with central laurel wreaths inset in the bottom bronze mounts. The exterior marble sides and both the exterior and interior of the tops are polished while the interiors are honed and still show some striations related to the tools used in cutting the stone. The interior bottoms are covered with brass disks. Each of these boxes measures 2 3/4" high (with lid closed) and 3 1/4" in diameter and weigh a hefty, 1 lb and 9 oz each. The interiors measure 2 1/4" in diameter and 1 7/8" high. These containers are in very good condition with patina commensurate with age and use. Note a slight circular etch mark on the top of one with a small chip on edge of the lid and some scratching to the bronze trim at the back near the hinge of the same one. The interiors of both lids show some etching to the polished surfaces from ink bottles or other items stored inside for some time - see photos for details. A handsome pair of decorative boxes perfect for styling a mantel, a writing desk, a library bookshelf or flanking a centerpiece on a dining table.
