Vintage, signed, mid-century gouache Watercolor rendering of an interesting section of an early Italian fresco discovered during excavations of the House of Vetti villa in Pompeii, covered in ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. This small painting was created by artist Marie Cirillo in the 1970s as a souvenir, an example of a "Grand Tour"-style momento which had been so popular to young aristocratic men in the 16th-18th centuries as they traveled to study and experience the art and culture of mostly ancient Rome and Greece. The scene depicted is one of a various cherubs busy with what looks like cooking or preparing medicines. This picture (12" long and 5" high) is nicely matted and framed with a matching rose-colored mat and a mid-century, distressed walnut and gold/silver leaf trimmed frame (19" long, 11 1/4" high and 7/8" deep). New dust cover and hanging hook on back. Overall in very good condition - see photos for details. A charming piece to enliven a small space or to add to others for a collection.
