Large, vintage rawhide, 8-sided bell Lamp Shade with gut lacing and iron frame. This rustic, western style shade measures 14 1/4" high and is 6" in diameter across the top and 19" in diameter across the bottom. It is made of light-colored, thick cowhide with some animal hair still present on the outside, stretched over a heavy iron shade frame which includes a bar with a hole at the top end for mounting on a lamp harp. Gut lacing surrounds both the top and bottom edges to attach the hide to the frame as well as to bind together the selvedges and secure them to the frame. These frames are made while the hide and gut are still somewhat wet and pliable, allowing the hide to be stretched to fit and form over the frame and the gut to be used like threading to secure the material to the frame. Once the materials dry, the shade becomes a hardback, though still translucent, which gives it much of its charm when the light is on. This lamp shade is in very good condition, with wear commensurate with age and some curling of the hide at the side seam - see photos for details. A wonderful shade coupled with an iron or ceramic based lamp for a natural, rustic feel.
