Vintage 1960, mid century modern, butterscotch-yellow glaze porcelain "personal" Ashtray designed by Kenji Fujita for Freeman Lederman and made in Japan. This atomic age ashtray measures 2 7/8" diameter by 1" high with a base that is slightly narrower at 2 1/4" in diameter to allow for such pieces to be stacked for storage. This was one of many pieces created by the Japanese-American mid century designer who was a student of famous California-based modernist designer Lagardo Tackett and became the principal designer for the household goods producer Freeman Lederman once Tackett stepped aside. Fujita blended traditional Japanese craftsmanship with organic Western modernism, developing sculptural carafes, minimalist espresso sets and spice jars and other items with woven rattan handles and using earth-toned glazes. Freeman Lederman was founded by David Lederman and William Freeman in southern CA (Van Nuys) in 1950, which by the mid '50s focused on high quality porcelain kitchen and household wares designed by American modernist designers of the period and made in Japan at the post-WW2 revamped porcelain production facilities there that were able to mass-produce the sleek, minimalist ceramics the company was developing and do so affordably. By the late 60's, when Japanese export companies began bypassing specialty distributors and selling mass-market generic ceramic items directly to US stores, Freeman Lederman wound down its production and disappeared from the market by 1968. This style of personal ashtrays came in standard black, white or tan, with the yellow color of this piece as an uncommon alternative. The piece has he Freeman Lederman company mark stamped in red on the bottom - stylized FL in a square. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, breaks or major wear present. A lovely little ash tray with mid century design history and flair for a bar, coffee table or to carry to your favorite spot.
