Vintage 1930s Art Deco, Bohemian (Czech) Cobalt Blue Cut to Clear Shot or Cordial Glasses by Karl Palda. These unusual 5-sided glasses have an offset pattern created by the half oval cut to clear geometric shapes staggered along the top and bottom edges. This creates not only an interesting pattern from the outside but also when gazing into the glasses from the top and when they are turned over, through the heavy bottom. Karl Palda who established his glassworks in Haida, Novy Bor, Bohemia in the early 20th century is famous for his avant garde designs in hand blown crystal, etched clear and matte satiated glass using complex geometry like these glasses listed. His work was a clear departure from classic 2-toned crystal with floral designs of the period and integrated new concepts from cubism, the avant garde and Art Deco styles emerging at the time. Palda concentrated on producing sets of drinking glasses, decanters, vases and vanity items. These glasses reflect Falda's use of complex geometry in his designs and the classic cut to clear work of Bohemian glass. They measure 2 1/4" high and 1 1/2" in diameter across the top and 1" across the base. In very good condition - one glass has a tiny 1/6" wide chip on the inside top edge, a 1/8" wide chip on the outside top edge and a scratch apparent on a blue side section, another glass has a flea bite on the top inside edge and another a flea bite on the top edge. (Photos of the top edges of each glass are shown to give the details.) No markings as was typical of these pieces. A striking set of glasses with a timeless design that still looks modern today. Would make a fabulous gift with s special bottle of spirits!
