Pair of antique European, hand crafted and hand painted, primitive Candle Wall Sconces with bright, multicolored folk art floral and botanical motifs. Found at a flea market in Switzerland. These candle holders are made from hand cut planks of light wood (pine or nut wood), slightly carved on the front side to create a slight 3-dimensional effect and the brackets holding the candle cups are attached to the backs with screws and the candle cups and the back pieces are nailed together. The backs are topped off with small iron rings for hanging. All the sections of he front of the sconce back, the brackets and candle covers are all thickly painted using bright but natural colored backgrounds, and details of flowers and leaves, edge trims and small accents - a very rustic, traditional, old world country European style. The backs were left unpainted and unlacquered. These sconces measure 21" high (to the top of the hanging rings), 6 3/4" wide and 7 1/2" deep and weigh only 11.5 oz each. These sconces have clearly been well used with scorching to some of the candle cups, some splitting of the ends of the brackets, paint wear and a couple of small missing pieces of wood on the bottom of one of the sconce backs - see photos for details. Despite the wear and patina on these pieces, they are striking and in a condition to still be used. (Recommend to use electric candles or glass or metal candle cups to line the existing wood candle cups.) A lovely set to add interest and cheer to a space.
