Antique Botanical Print of tropical ferns by David Blair from James Britten's 1880 book "Cassel's European Ferns" framed in the 1960's in a burlwood Frame with grasscloth mat. This piece (to the edges of the frame) measures 18 1/8" high, 15 1/8" wide and is 1/2" deep. The print alone is 10 1/2" by 7 7/8". The print is a chromolithograph by David Blair, an Australian botanical illustrator and artist who traveled extensively in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, using its environments and peoples to inspire his work. He is best known for his work for Robert Bentley and Henry Timan's book "Medicinal Plants", printed in London in 1880. This print of Hart's-tongue fern (scolopendrium vulgore), a medicinal plant, and ivy fern (scolopendrium hemionitis) in 1/3 natural size was printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Sons, Lithographers for botanist James Britten's book "Cassel's European Ferns", a leather-bound volume with 30 color plates of plant examples, published by Cassel, Pelter, Galpin & Co., London 1880. Britten (1846-1924) was a botanist for the British Museum at the time. This print was removed from one of these volumes and tastefully framed. The print remains in very good condition, with bright colors and clear markings despite its age, showing very little fading and spotting. The frame has some slight wear and the backing paper has a few tears as shown in detailed photos. Hanging clamp on back top. A lovely framed work, with scientifically accurate foliage, to give that organic, natural touch to a space.
