Large, 19th century French, lidded, round, grass green Opaline Glass Jar or Box with ormolu mounts and hinge. This stunning, cylindrical powder jar or dresser/jewelry box is 6" in diameter and 3" high and weighs a hefty 2 lbs 7 oz. It is made of thick, smooth, translucent opaline glass so that the contents can only be slightly seen. The box has an elegant and silky feel to the glass surfaces with slightly raised and rounded edges. The ormolu mounts rim the edges of the matching bottom and lid with an intricate edge pattern typical of French glass pieces of the period. Found at an estate sale, used as a powder jar with a large puff. Since been thoroughly cleaned. In overall very good condition with patina and wear from age - see photos for details - a small mark on the surface of the lid and a little bubble in lid both which appear to be original to the blowing of the glass. The center of the inside bottom shows some etching of the surface, though it feels smooth. A stunning box in an unusual color sure to add an unexpected pop of color and elegance!
