Antique, 19th Century French gilt brass Candelabras with glass flowers. These baroque style church or altar lights from the 1830s, feature cast and wrought brass parts, each individually gilt then assembled with a center internal steel screw and the white opaline cast glass flowers are held by tiny brass nuts that screw in with the brass center stamens. The flowers, branches and leaves, supported by a three-legged, highly detailed base, all face to the front of the fixtures, with the back unadorned as the back side faced away from view and against the altar or wall in a shrine. These candelabras each measure 20" high, about 13" wide and 6" deep. Each candelabra has 3 candle cups that accommodate standard taper candles (as shown in photo). The center "trunk" and branches resemble those of a lily and are accented by the opaline glass flowers, also in the design of small lilies. In Christianity, lilies symbolize purity, innocence and heavenly virtues associated with the Virgin Mary and to the resurrection and new life of Jesus. Such candelabras contributed to the brightness of church interiors in the late baroque period. These candelabra have been carefully cleaned and are in very good condition with some wear on the gilt brass sections as well as on the glass flowers (slight dark spots) as shown in photos. One candelabra is missing a flower (the stem is still there as shown in detailed photo). A stunning pair of candelabras to light up a mantel, buffet or dining table.
