The silver overlay was created through an electroplating process where silver was electrolytically fused directly onto the glazed porcelain. German porcelain factories during this era (including Weimar, Hutschenreuther, and Rosenthal) frequently manufactured these solid cobalt blanks, both marked and unmarked, and either applied simple overlay in-house or sent them out to independent, specialized silver art studios, that applied custom silver geometric or floral overlay. This vase has a destinctly Art Deco character with fine arched, web-like, 4-sided overlay pattern that wraps around the bulbous part of the piece and was perhaps an in-house product for its local market as the silver overlay is thick enough to be raised but does not bear a purity mark. The bottom is marked only with an incised and over-glazed number \"442\", which indicates the model or shape of the piece produced for the mass market. These pieces were either sent out to be sold directly or were sent to small boutique studios who applied overlay or hand painting details before releasing them in the market. The vase measures 2 1\/8\" high and 2 3\/8\" diameter across the top lip and the base is 1 1\/2\" in diameter. In excellent condition, see photos for details. An adorable vase with a striking design!
