Weaving vintage and antique items into your décor is more art than science, with few hard and fast rules to help the inexperienced or unsure. Starting small or simple is the best way, no need to invest big, leave room for changes. Start with items that not only catch your eye, but speak to you. If it makes you say, “Hey, I like this!” and bring a smile or second look, it could be a piece to grab for your space, your corner, your personal moment.
Just as when considering new items for your home, the size, scale, color, texture and other elements of a piece can determine whether the pairing of vintage items with new ones in your space is ultimately successful. Older items often have sizing and proportions that differ from contemporary items. Drinkware is a good example of this. Wine, champagne, martini and old fashioned glassware have all grown substantially in size since the 1960s. Similarly, antique bed linens came in all sizes as beds were largely custom made and beds larger than double (French) beds were rare, so old sheets are usually small by modern standards. Chairs and sofas were also pieces that were much smaller than their modern counterparts to accommodate people who were generally smaller in stature. To help with managing size and proportion, shop with a tape measure and with mental or written notes of sizes of items already in your space. Notes on color, texture and function will help to consciously chose things that compliment what you already have.
Aside from size considerations, other elements of objects can help you create a harmonious relationship between old and new. Matching color or textural elements or similar shapes or lines to existing pieces gives the pieces something in common that the eye recognizes, creating a blended look. Contrasting textures, colors or materials will allow for your new-old piece to stand out relative to its surroundings and can bring a fun, unexpected element to the space.

If you are new to bringing vintage in your home or are unsure of whether you are doing it “right”, start with something that really brings you excitement. Take some time to consider what it is about that item that speaks to you and its visual elements - Size, color, texture, style. Does it work with your space and what is already in it? Bring it in and live with it for a while.
Enjoy. Reconsider.
